Arrive in Paro and Transfer to Thimphu
Day programme
Your Truly Bhutan Travel representative and licensed guide will welcome you at Paro International Airport. After immigration and baggage collection, begin the scenic drive along the Paro Chhu and Wang Chhu river corridors to Thimphu. The gradual transfer supports acclimatisation while introducing Bhutanese farmhouses, terraced fields and forested valley slopes.
Visit Buddha Dordenma at Kuenselphodrang, where the monumental gilded statue overlooks the capital and the surrounding mountains. Continue to the Motithang Takin Preserve to observe Bhutan's national animal in a protected forest setting, then visit the Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory to follow the traditional process of producing desho from Daphne and Edgeworthia bark.

Thimphu to Phobjikha via Dochula, Punakha and Lampelri
Day programme
Depart early for Dochula Pass. On a clear morning, the pass offers distant views of Bhutan's high Himalayan range. Walk among the 108 Druk Wangyel chortens and visit the hilltop temple before descending to the Royal Botanical Park at Lampelri. The park protects temperate forests and a nationally significant rhododendron collection.
Continue into the Punakha valley. A short walk through rice fields leads to Chimi Lhakhang, associated with the unconventional Buddhist master Drukpa Kunley. After lunch, visit Punakha Dzong at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu. The fortress-monastery served as Bhutan's historic seat of government and remains one of the country's finest examples of dzong architecture.
In the afternoon, follow the mountain road through Wangdue and across forested ridges into the glacial Phobjikha Valley. Check in after dark if traffic or sightseeing runs late. Warm layers should remain accessible for the final high-altitude section.

Black-necked Crane Festival in Phobjikha Valley
Day programme
Attend the annual Black-necked Crane Festival at Gangtey Goenpa. Held on 11 November, the community celebration links Buddhist culture with conservation of the cranes that migrate from the Tibetan Plateau to winter in Phobjikha. The programme usually includes masked dances, folk performances, school presentations and the popular crane dance.
Your guide will explain festival etiquette, symbolic costumes and the relationship between Gangtey Monastery, local farming communities and the protected wetland. Time remains flexible so you are present for the strongest ceremonial and cultural sequences announced by the organisers.
In the afternoon, visit the Black-necked Crane Information Centre for interpretation of migration, habitat and conservation work. Continue on the Gangtey Nature Trail through pine forest, farm settlements and wetland viewpoints. Crane sightings depend on migration timing, weather and the birds' natural movement.
Altitude profile
Activities take place between approximately 2,900 m and 3,000 m. The Gangtey Nature Trail involves an estimated 100-150 m of ascent and the same descent, depending on the selected route.

Phobjikha to Berti through Trongsa and Zhemgang
Day programme
Leave Phobjikha after an early breakfast and climb toward Pelela Pass before descending to Chendebji Chorten. The large Nepalese-style stupa stands beside the river and marks an important point on the historic east-west route.
Continue to Trongsa Dzong, an immense fortress positioned above the Mangde Chhu gorge. Its strategic location once controlled travel between eastern and western Bhutan. After a focused visit, descend through subtropical forest toward Tingtibi and Berti.
The Mangde Chhu corridor supports the critically endangered White-bellied Heron. Your guide will stop at safe river viewpoints where recent local information supports a responsible search. Sightings are never guaranteed. Reach Berti in the evening for a community-based lodge experience beside a major conservation landscape.
Altitude profile
Start near 2,900 m. Cross Pelela at approximately 3,390 m, then descend through Chendebji and Trongsa to approximately 600 m at Berti. Estimated principal ascent is 500 m and descent is 2,800 m.
Overnight stay
Berti White-bellied Heron Eco Lodge or the best available community eco-lodge near Tingtibi. Facilities are simpler than urban hotels, with clean rooms, local meals and direct community benefit.
Berti to Trong Heritage Village
Day programme
After breakfast, travel from the warm river valley toward Zhemgang. Short roadside stops introduce the changing vegetation, rural livelihoods and viewpoints over the Mangde Chhu basin.
Arrive at Trong Heritage Village, a compact settlement of traditional stone houses overlooking Zhemgang Dzong. Walk through narrow lanes with your host and guide, learning how stone masonry, timber details, courtyards, family altars and community spaces preserve the character of the old town.
Local residents welcome the group with a Tshogchang programme, a traditional gesture of hospitality involving local food and drink. Continue with a heritage-home visit and a private cultural programme arranged for the group. The experience places tourism income directly within the host community.
Altitude profile
Begin near 600 m at Berti and climb to approximately 1,950 m at Trong Heritage Village. Estimated principal ascent is 1,450 m and descent is 150 m, with short village walks on stone paths and steps.
Overnight stay
A heritage homestay or best available guesthouse in or near Trong Village. Accommodation is clean and locally managed. Private bathroom access depends on final room allocation, and heating standards are simpler than in 3-star hotels.
Trong Heritage Village to Bumthang via Trongsa
Day programme
Visit Zhemgang Dzong in the morning, subject to official access and local functions. Continue north toward Trongsa for the Tower of Trongsa Museum, housed in the historic Ta Dzong. The galleries interpret Bhutan's monarchy, regional history, Buddhist art and the strategic role of Trongsa.
After lunch, follow the central highway through fir, hemlock and broadleaf forest toward Yotongla Pass. Join your guide for a respectful prayer-flag hoisting ceremony. The flags carry printed prayers into the surrounding environment and should be placed according to local custom and guidance.
Descend through Chumey into Bumthang, Bhutan's spiritual heartland. Arrive in the Jakar area for hotel check-in, dinner and rest.
Altitude profile
Start near 1,950 m, climb through Trongsa to Yotongla Pass at approximately 3,425 m, and descend to approximately 2,650 m in Bumthang. Estimated principal ascent is 1,600 m and descent is 900 m.

Bumthang to Mongar through Phrumsengla National Park
Day programme
Depart through Ura and climb into Phrumsengla National Park. The protected area spans elevations from subtropical forest to alpine terrain and contains old-growth fir, temperate broadleaf forest, rhododendrons and habitat for red panda, tiger and many rare birds.
Stop at the in-situ rhododendron garden and high-pass viewpoints, then descend through Sengor to Namling Waterfall. The road traverses one of Bhutan's sharpest ecological transitions, moving from cold conifer forest into warm broadleaf vegetation within a few hours.
Near Yongkola, visit a local household or roadside producer for a tasting and demonstration of beaten maize, subject to host confirmation. Continue through Lingmethang and climb to Mongar before evening.
Altitude profile
Start near 2,650 m and reach approximately 3,780 m at Phrumsengla / Thrumshingla Pass. The road then descends below 1,000 m near Lingmethang before climbing to approximately 1,600 m in Mongar. Estimated principal ascent is 2,100 m and descent is 3,100 m.

A 3-star or best available hotel in Mongar. Rooms have private facilities, and dinner is served at the hotel after a demanding mountain-road day.
Mongar to Trashigang via Korila and Gom Kora
Day programme
Cross Korila Pass through forest associated with birdlife, orchids and rhododendrons. Descend toward the Drangme Chhu basin, where the climate becomes warmer and the mountainsides steeper.
Make a detour to Gom Kora, a sacred temple beside the river. Local tradition connects the site with Guru Rinpoche, and the surrounding rock formations form part of its pilgrimage narrative. Your guide will interpret the murals, circumambulation route and annual festival traditions.
Continue to Trashigang Dzong, dramatically set above the confluence of the Drangme Chhu and Gamri Chhu. Visit subject to restoration work, official functions and opening conditions, then settle into your hotel.

Begin near 1,600 m, climb to Korila Pass at approximately 2,450 m, descend toward Gom Kora near 900 m, and finish around 1,150-1,500 m in Trashigang. Estimated principal ascent is 1,100 m and descent is 1,550 m.

Trashigang Festival and Rangjung Monastic School
Day programme
Attend the Trashigang Festival in the morning at Trashigang Dzong. The sacred celebration brings together communities from across eastern Bhutan for masked dances, blessings, traditional music, ceremonial performances and social gathering in national dress. Your guide will explain festival etiquette, the symbolism of the dances and the religious narratives represented in the courtyard.
After lunch, travel through the Gamri Valley to Rangjung Woesel Choeling Monastery and its monastic school. Subject to the daily school programme and local permission, meet resident monks, observe the learning environment and gain an informed perspective on Buddhist education and monastic life in eastern Bhutan.
Return to Trashigang in the late afternoon. Time permitting, walk through the town and enjoy the festival atmosphere before dinner and a second overnight stay in Trashigang.
Altitude profile
Local travel remains mainly between approximately 1,100 m and 1,500 m. Estimated cumulative local ascent and descent are each about 350 m, excluding short walks around the dzong and monastery.

Private Charter Mountain Flight from Yonphula to Paro
Day programme
After an early breakfast, drive from Trashigang to Yonphula Airport for the private charter mountain flight to Paro on Wednesday, 18 November 2026. The highland road climbs through forested slopes and scattered settlements, with sufficient time allocated for airport check-in and charter-flight formalities.
The east-to-west charter sector takes approximately 45 minutes and offers wide aerial views across Bhutan's mountain ranges, deep river valleys and remote settlements when visibility is clear. Tiger's Nest Hike, Hot-Stone Bath and Gala Dinner
Day programme
Drive to Ramthangkha and begin the hike to Taktsang Monastery, known as Tiger's Nest. The trail climbs through blue-pine forest to a cafeteria viewpoint, then continues to the main overlook and a sequence of steps into the gorge. Your guide will set a steady pace with water and rest stops.
Enter the temple complex after depositing cameras and bags according to monastery rules. The sacred site is associated with Guru Rinpoche's meditation in the eighth century and remains one of Bhutan's most revered pilgrimage destinations. Return by the same trail for a late lunch.
In the afternoon, relax with a traditional hot-stone bath prepared with river stones and local herbs. Close the journey with a gala dinner featuring Bhutanese cuisine, group reflections and farewell hospitality.

The trailhead is approximately 2,600 m and Taktsang Monastery is approximately 3,120 m. The return hike gains about 520 m and loses about 520 m over roughly 6-8 km, with many stone steps near the monastery.

Altitude and timing methodology
Road ascent and descent figures represent estimated gross changes between principal waypoints, not survey-grade cumulative elevation. Mountain roads include repeated minor climbs and descents, so GPS recordings will differ. Hiking figures use standard trailhead and destination elevations.
Driving times exclude extended meal stops, photography, road blocks and attraction visits. Touring time gives the expected door-to-door operating day. Day 2, Day 4, Day 6 and Day 7 are long mountain-road days and require early departure.
