What Is the 18-Day Bhutan Bird Watching Tour?
The Route
The 18-day Bhutan Bird Watching Tour covers the country’s full birding range, from high alpine passes in the west to subtropical foothill forest in the south. The route starts in Paro and moves through Thimphu, Punakha, Phobjikha, Bumthang, Yongkala, and Lingmethang before finishing at Gelephu on the Indian border and returning to Guwahati Airport. We are a government-licensed luxury operator based in Thimphu with over 17 years of direct Bhutan field experience, leads every departure with certified local birding guides who know each habitat and its seasonal species firsthand.
Why Bhutan for Birding
Bhutan holds over 770 recorded bird species within 38,000 square kilometres, roughly the same total as the entire European continent. The country’s 72% forest cover spans five distinct altitude zones. Each zone holds a completely different bird community. Subtropical broadleaf forest in the south gives way to temperate mixed forest in the central valleys, conifer and rhododendron forest above 2,500m, and alpine scrub near the high passes. No other destination in Asia gives you this full vertical range within a single 18-day route.
Conservation and Access
Bhutan does not restrict birding to parks or reserves. Brief roadside stops in farmland, forest edges, and river corridors produce sightings throughout the journey. Over 50% of the country falls under formal protected area status. The Sustainable Development Fee keeps visitor numbers low and habitats intact. Your presence directly funds the conservation model that makes Bhutan’s bird diversity possible.
Top Target Species
The route covers habitat for White-bellied Heron along the Punakha rivers, Ward’s Trogon in the Lingmethang subtropical forest, Beautiful Nuthatch in Tingtibi, Rufous-necked Hornbill in the eastern foothills, Satyr Tragopan and Blood Pheasant on forested ridges, Himalayan Monal at Chele La Pass, Black-necked Crane in Phobjikha valley, Pallas’s Fish Eagle on the Mo Chu, and Great Hornbill in the Royal Manas buffer zones near Gelephu. New species continue to be added to Bhutan’s list each year as the southern and eastern zones receive more systematic survey attention.
Best Time to Go
March to May gives the highest bird activity. Breeding season brings full song, visible display, and maximum species diversity below 3,100m. Rhododendron blooms on the high passes make this the most visually dramatic season. September to November gives clear skies and strong migration activity through the passes. Late October to February brings the Black-necked Crane to Phobjikha valley from the Tibetan Plateau.

Bhutan holds over 770 recorded bird species within 38,000 square kilometres, roughly the same total as the entire European continent. The country’s 72% forest cover spans five altitude zones from subtropical plains at 150m to alpine terrain above 5,000m. Over 50% of land falls under formal protected area status. Unlike most Asian birding destinations, Bhutan does not restrict birding to parks or reserves. Roadside stops, farmland edges, and river corridors produce sightings throughout the full 18-day route.

The route covers habitat for all of Bhutan’s most sought-after species. Primary targets include White-bellied Heron on the Punakha rivers, Ward’s Trogon and Rufous-necked Hornbill in Lingmethang subtropical forest, Beautiful Nuthatch in Tingtibi, Satyr Tragopan and Blood Pheasant on forested ridges, Himalayan Monal at Chele La Pass, Black-necked Crane in Phobjikha, Pallas’s Fish Eagle on the Mo Chu, and Great Hornbill near Gelephu.

March to May gives the highest bird activity across all habitat zones. Breeding season brings full song, visible display, and maximum species diversity. Rhododendron blooms on Dochula and Chele La make spring the most vivid season visually. September to November gives clear skies and strong migration through the high passes. Late October to February brings the Black-necked Crane to Phobjikha valley. Both spring and autumn 2026-27 departures are available.

Our team places you in premium hotels in Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Phobjikha, and Bumthang. Tented camp accommodation is provided at Lingmethang for four nights and at Tingtibi for two nights. Camp sites are chosen for direct access to the best birding forest and set up with full meal service and clean facilities. All other nights are in carefully selected hotels and guesthouses along the route.

Bring binoculars with at least 8×42 magnification as a minimum. A spotting scope significantly improves views of distant or canopy species and is strongly recommended for this route. Pack layered clothing covering temperatures from warm subtropical forest at 300m to cold alpine passes at 3,780m. Waterproof layers and sturdy walking shoes are essential. A field guide to the birds of Bhutan or the Eastern Himalayas is strongly recommended. Your guide provides a full recommended gear list on booking confirmation.

Final Thoughts
The Full Altitude Range in 18 Days
No other Bhutan birding route covers the full vertical range from alpine pass to tropical foothill in a single journey. Chele La Pass at 3,780m and Gelephu at 300m sit at opposite ends of Bhutan’s ecological spectrum. The 18-day route connects them through every habitat in between. Each zone holds species the others do not. By the end of the tour, your list reflects the full breadth of what Bhutan holds.
Lingmethang and Tingtibi
Most birding tours from overseas operators stay in western Bhutan. The Lingmethang Road and Tingtibi sections of this route reach into habitats most visitors never access. Ward’s Trogon, Beautiful Nuthatch, and Rufous-necked Hornbill are not casual sightings. They require the right habitat, the right guide, and the right amount of time. Four days at Lingmethang and two days at Tingtibi give you all three.

Spring 2026 & 2027 departures are open now. We accepts a limited number of guests on each departure. Peak spring and autumn birding dates fill ahead of the season. Confirm your place before your preferred window closes.
