What is the Rafting in Bhutan Tour?
The 10-day Rafting in Bhutan tour combines two days of guided river rafting on the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers in Punakha valley with cultural sightseeing across Thimphu, Punakha, Gangtey, and Paro. The rafting sections cover rapids from Class I to IV, making the tour accessible to beginners while giving experienced paddlers genuine challenge on the upper stretches. We are government-licensed luxury operator based in Thimphu with over 17 years of experience in premium Bhutan tourism, leads every departure with expert local guides and fully certified river safety staff.

The Rivers of Bhutan
Punakha valley holds two of Bhutan’s most celebrated rivers. The Mo Chu, the Mother River, flows with a gentler current and suits beginners and families. The Pho Chu, the Father River, moves faster with stronger rapids and gives experienced rafters a more demanding run. Both rivers originate in the high Himalayan glaciers of northern Bhutan and converge at the base of Punakha Dzong, one of the most photographed confluences in the country. The water is clear, cold, and clean throughout.

All Levels Welcome
Bhutan’s rivers cover the full range from tranquil Class I flows to technical Class IV rapids. First-time rafters paddle the lower Mo Chu sections in calm water with wide views of the valley. Experienced rafters take on the upper Pho Chu and upper Mo Chu stretches where the current quickens and the rapids demand active paddling and clear communication. Your guide assesses conditions on the day and places each guest on the section that matches their ability.

Beyond the River in Bhutan
The 10 days include Thimphu’s cultural highlights, a visit to Punakha Dzong at the river confluence, a hike to Chimi Lhakhang across the rice fields, exploration of Phobjikha valley and the Gangtey Monastery, and the full-day hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery above Paro valley. The itinerary is designed so the rafting days sit within a broader luxury Bhutan experience rather than being isolated activity days.

Best Time to Go
March to May and September to November give the best rafting conditions. River levels are stable, weather is clear, and the surrounding valley scenery is at its most vivid. Summer rafting from April to October operates between 6am and 5pm. Winter rafting from November to March operates between 7am and 3pm. Conditions outside these windows depend on rainfall and are confirmed closer to departure.

Truly Bhutan Travel designs this tour so the two rafting days sit at the centre of a complete western Bhutan luxury itinerary. You arrive through Paro, take in Thimphu’s cultural depth, raft the Punakha rivers, walk the Phobjikha valley floor, and finish on the cliff trail to Tiger’s Nest. Each day is a different kind of Bhutan. The rivers connect them all.
