Royal Highland Festival

Laya, Gasa

The festival brings together highlanders from other parts of Bhutan to exchange values, knowledge, skills, and best practices related to highlands and yak farming.

Visitors can witness the traditional offering of Buelwa (Gift offering) with Auley (traditional epic poem/song recitation tradition originating from Zhabdrung Rinpoche days) that began during Zhabdrung Rinpoche’s reign in showing loyalty and respect by the community of Laya village is being offered for the dynamic and visionary leadership of our successive monarchs during the festival.

Layaps will present a variety of cultural activities. There will be competitions on highland animals such as Yaks, horses, and Mastiffs, as well as competitions on traditional music and dances.

The event includes a variety of vendors selling anything from local yak food to highland technology, highland agriculture technologies, medicinal herbs and plants, and more.
