Prakhar Duchhoed

The Prakhar Duchhoed is held at the Prakhar Goemba, in the Chumey Valley of Bumthang, which is about half an hour’s drive from Chamkhar town. Prakhar Goemba is the main temple of the village. It is about 10 minutes’ walk from the road and was built around the 16th century.

Every year, a performance of Prakhar Tshechu is held at Prakhar Lhakhang.

The three-day celebration lasts three days, and the dances and chams performed during that time are the same as those seen in other dzongkhags.

Insights

The Prakar Lhakhang in Chummi gewog, Bumthang, hosts the yearly Prakhar Duchhoed celebration. During the festival, a variety of mask dances are performed. The event is held in honor of Lama Thukse Dawa, a son of the revered Buddhist guru Terton Pema Lingpa who lived in the fifteenth century.

Prakhar Duchhoed

Prakhar Lhakhang, Chumey, BUMTHANG

The festival is held at the Prakhar Goemba, in the Chumey Valley of Bumthang, which is about half an hour’s drive from Chamkhar town. Prakhar Goemba is the main temple of the village.

It is about 10 minutes’ walk from the road and was built around the 16th century.

It is said that Langur helped build this Lhakhang, humans would build it during the day and the monkeys would continue the work at night, hence the name ‘Prakhar’, which means ‘White Monkey’.

The festival lasts for 3 days from the 16th to the 18th of the ninth lunar month in the Bhutanese calendar.

People get the chance to receive Thuktshe Dawa‘s blessing (Kudra Wang) on the third night of the Tshechu.
