Tharpaling Trail

  • Trail Name: Tharpaling Trail
  • Distance: 13 km
  • Difficulty: Intermediate

This trail is a downhiller’s dream. After about a 30-minute shuttle to the top of Tharpaling monastery, followed by a steep hike-a-bike up through the upper temple grounds, one is rewarded with around 13 km of true single track. Starting at over 3700 meters of elevation, it descends nearly 1000 meters along the ridgeline but does contain a handful of short, steep climbs.

There are several tight and fun switchbacks; some small rock drops (1 ft. or less), as well as numerous banked turns. The trail ends directly on the Bumthang highway at Kiki La pass. Your vehicle can easily pick you up there for another shuttle or you can opt to cruise downhill into the central town of Jakar for food and lodging.
