BBS Tower Loop: A Thrilling Mountain Biking Experience in Bhutan

The BBS Tower Loop stands out as a premier mountain biking trail, offering a blend of challenge and beauty. This 4 km trail, marked as intermediate-to-advanced, is an exciting journey for mountain biking enthusiasts.

Trail Highlights and Features:

  • Starting Point: The trail begins with a vigorous, steep ascent to the base of the BBS Television broadcasting tower. This initial climb is a test of stamina and skill, setting the tone for the adventure ahead.
  • Scenic Ascent: As you ascend, the trail winds sharply through a forest of prayer flags, creating a colorful and culturally rich environment. This segment offers a mix of steep and smooth sections, providing a diverse riding experience.
  • Speed Opportunities: After the initial climb, the trail transitions to a tree-covered single track. This part of the trail is smoother, allowing bikers to pick up speed while enjoying the serene beauty of the surrounding nature.
  • Technical Challenges: Riders should be prepared for off-camber and blind turns, adding a layer of technical difficulty to the ride. One of the key features is a technical steep descent, known as a “chute,” that demands skill and concentration.
  • Cultural Interlude: The trail leads to the Wangditse Monastery, offering a perfect spot for a brief stop and a photo opportunity with a panoramic view of Thimphu city.
  • Final Stretch: The trail concludes with a rolling single track that takes you to the Sangaygang Temple, marking the end of the loop. This final segment provides a more relaxed ride, allowing riders to take in the natural beauty and cultural essence of the area.

The BBS Tower Loop is a perfect blend of physical challenge, technical riding, and cultural immersion. It’s an ideal trail for intermediate-to-advanced mountain bikers seeking an authentic Bhutanese biking experience. The trail’s varied terrain, from steep ascents to technical descents, coupled with its scenic and cultural landmarks, makes it a must-ride for mountain biking enthusiasts visiting Bhutan.
