Overview of the Amo Chhu Crocodile Breeding Centre
Amo Chhu Crocodile breeding centre is located at a distance of 10 min from the bus terminal of Phuentsholing along the bank of river Amo Chuu. It was built in 1976 with only a few bunches of crocodiles. Currently, the Amo Chuu crocodile breeding centre plays the role of preserving the endangered species as well as helping in rising the tourism of Phuentsholing. At the breeding centre tourists can observe two species of crocodile gharials and muggers which are listed under the list of critically endangered species by the International Union of Conservative Nature.
Observations and Experiences at the Amo Chhu Crocodile Breeding Centre
The remarkable breeding centre has derived its name from the river stream Amo Chuu. With only a half-acre area, the Amo Chuu crocodile breeding centre has fascinatingly caught the attention of many tourists since it’s not a daily occurrence to observe the large aquatic reptile in such a semi-natural habitat. The crocodiles are bred in captivity and nurtured till they can adapt themselves to their natural habitat.
Once the crocodile reaches an uncertain age they are released in the wildlife sanctuary of Bhutan. It is quite astounding to see the large stealthy and dangerous predators lying ideally and basking in the sun. To the untrained eyes, all the crocodiles might seem similar but few with the knowledge can distinguish between a gharial and mugger species of crocodile.
Upon keen observation, tourists can tell the difference between those two distant cousins since the gharial has a narrow snout whereas, the mugger or the marsh crocodile are known for having the broadest snout in their family. The area of Amo Chuu is rather small which sometimes makes it seem too crowded, but there have been plans made to relocate the Amo Chhu Crocodile Breeding Centre to a bigger location with improved facilities in the upcoming future.
The most fascinating thing about visiting the Amo chhu crocodile breeding centre is observing an oversized lizard while only being separated by a single fence which can be an everlasting memory. - Amo Chhu Crocodile Breeding Centre is open for tourists from 9 am to 5 pm.
- If the tourists want to witness the crocodile being fed they are advised to plan their visit within the timeframe of 10 am to 12 pm (the general feeding time of the crocodile of centre).
